Red Ribbon Week 2016

Red Ribbon Week is a nationally recognized and celebrated week where we can demonstrate our opposition to drugs. The Red Ribbon Campaign is a national campaign that supports the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s efforts to reduce the demand for drugs through prevention and education programs. Hopefully you have noticed the red ribbons throughout the city of Homewood showing the community’s support of this national campaign in addition to what we are doing in the schools.

The national Red Ribbon Week Celebration brings millions of people together to raise the awareness of the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. This campaign also supports and encourages prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. We hope everyone at HMS will be committed to a tobacco, alcohol, and other drug free lifestyle so we can all achieve our unique potential! Please wear a red shirt tomorrow to show your support for leaving a healthy lifestyle! 

Red Ribbon Week 2016

Homewood Middle School joins a number of other schools that will mark this week as Red Ribbon Week. This is a week that honors the memory of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, an undercover U.S. Drug Enforcement Officer who was killed in the line of duty in Mexico in 1985. Red Ribbon Week began the following year in his hometown in California, organized by family and friends who wore red ribbons in Kiki’s honor. In 1988, Congress proclaimed the last full week in October as National Red Ribbon Week. National observance of Red Ribbon Week has grown to more than 100,000 schools. This year's theme is “YOLO. Be Drug Free.” In marking Red Ribbon Week, HMS is among thousands of schools pledging to be drug free in America!

Message from the Safe and Healthy Homewood Coalition

Today is CASA (The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse) Family Day. This is a national movement to celebrate parental engagement as an effective tool to help keep kids substance free. A family dinner is an excellent opportunity to communicate with your kids and to really listen to what’s on their minds. Youth who have frequent family dinners are less likely to smoke, drink, abuse prescription drugs, and use illicit drugs. For more information and ideas, please use the following link: CASA Family Day.
