Red Ribbon Week ~ "Love Yourself ~ Be Drug Free"

Homewood Middle School joins a number of other schools across the United States that will mark this week as Red Ribbon Week.

This is a week that honors the memory of Enrique "KiKi" Camarena, an undercover U.S. Drug Enforcement Officer who was killed in the line of duty in Mexico in 1985. Red Ribbon Week began the following year in his hometown in California, organized by family and friends who wore red ribbons in Kiki's honor.

In 1988, Congress proclaimed the last full week in October as National Red Ribbon Week. National observance of Red Ribbon Week has grown to more than 100,000 schools.

The national Red Ribbon Week celebration brings millions of people together to raise the awareness of the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. This campaign also supports and encourages drug prevention, early intervention, and treatment services.

Our theme this year is "Love Yourself ~ Be Drug Free." In marking Red Ribbon Week, HMS is among thousands of schools pledging to be drug free in America.

Be on the lookout for red ribbons throughout the city of Homewood thanks to the Homewood Chamber of Commerce and the Safe and Healthy Homewood Coalition!
